The domestic and national HEPP turbine project, which started to be produced by Gimas, was featured in the national press.

Hydroelectric power plants turbine was developed as domestic and national. The production of the turbine, which was developed and tested, was also undertaken by GIMAS in Izmir. Thus, a project in the context of the transformation of design and R&D into commercial products, which is frequently brought to the agenda, has provided a tangible commercial output.

For the first time in Turkey, the turbine, which is the main unit generating electricity in hydroelectric power plants, was developed domestically and nationally. Moreover, the production of the developed and tested turbine has also started. The turbine, whose production is expected to be completed in a short time, will be installed in the Kepez-1 hydroelectric power plant (HES) in Antalya. As of October 2018, the domestic and national turbine is expected to start generating electricity.

The model turbine design and testing of the turbine developed and produced within the scope of the TÜBİTAK-supported MİLHES project was carried out at TOBB University of Economics and Technology (TOBB-ETÜ). Depending on the scale, it costs 400 thousand Euros for a single turbine to be tested abroad.

Within the scope of efforts towards the domestic and national production of high-tech products in Turkey, success was achieved in the hydroelectric power plant turbine. For the first time, a turbine of 100 per cent domestic production and national design was produced and started to be installed in the power plant. Until now, HEPP turbines in Turkey were either produced under licence or imported. The ‘Domestic Design and Production of Hydroelectric Power Plant Components (MİLHES) Project’, which was initiated in 2015 with the support of TÜBİTAK, has started to bear fruit. The turbine produced for the first time is counting the days to be installed for the first time in place of the aging turbine of the Kepez-1 HEPP located on the Düden Stream in Antalya.

Design by TÜBİTAK and generator by TEMSAN

In the TUBITAK-supported MİLHES project, a model of the turbine to be installed in Kepez-1 was produced at the TOBB ETÜ Water Turbine Design and Test Centre (ETÜ Hidro), and the necessary test was carried out for the actual turbine to be manufactured. Following the test, all technical drawings and solid models of the turbine ready for manufacturing were given to the turbine manufacturer. Thus, a national product was created through university-industry co-operation with public support. The turbine was manufactured at Gimas in Izmir. In the MİLHES project, the generator was designed by TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Centre and the generator was manufactured by TEMSAN.

Project cost is 23 million TL

Providing information about MİLHES, Selin Aradağ Çelebioğlu, Faculty of Engineering lecturer at TOBB ETÜ, reminded that the development project has a budget of 23 million TL. Çelebioğlu reminded that the price to be paid if the developed model is tested abroad is 400 thousand Euros, emphasising that this money is not spent abroad and that the testing and certification is carried out at TOBB ETÜ Hydro, and said, ‘There are over 600 registered hydroelectric power plants in Turkey. Some of them belong to the private sector and some to the public sector. Especially large hydroelectric power plants such as Keban and Karakaya need renewal and rehabilitation for various parts including turbines. The renovation of each of the large plants is estimated to cost around 50 million euro, while the renovation of smaller plants such as Kepez is estimated to cost around 5 million euro. Renewal of only the state-owned power plants can reach 250-300 million euros with a rough calculation.’

Emphasising that TOBB ETÜ Hydro is the world's highest capacity test centre with a size of 2 MW, he said that 30 people are working only at TOBB ETÜ within the scope of the project. Kutay Çelebioğlu coordinated the design and test responsibility of the turbine at TOBB ETÜ Hydro, while Yiğit Taşçıoğlu was responsible for model production.
